Don’t Get Sick Avoid the ick

Blue-green algae can produce toxins that make people and animals sick.
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) happen when algae grows out of control, producing toxins that can harm people, pets, fish and wildlife.
HABs can make you sick through contact or swallowing water. If you see discolored, scummy, or foul-smelling water, stay out and keep pets away.
HABs can come in a variety of different shapes and colors or green – blue.
Steer clear. Rinse off. When in doubt, stay out.
If you would like to report an observed bloom, please click HERE to go to the WI DNR Blue-Green Algae information page and report a bloom.
If you or your pets have sudden illness or signs of poisoning following exposure, please call your doctor or veterinarian, or the Wisconsin Poison Center at 800-222-1222.
